The layout of Volkswagen BlueSport will be the same as its concept: a two-seater arrangement with canvas roof and a weight of about 2650 lbs. The brand new ‘MMB platform’ of the car will be developed through the partnership with Audi and Porsche (though most of the development will be done by Porsche, given their experience with rear engine RWD cars). BlueSport’s chassis will share components with the Golf, in order to reduce production costs.

According to Autoevolution: A new 1.6-liter FSI turbocharged engine has been developed for this model. Producing 220 hp and fitted with a variable valve lift system, the powerplant will be mated ti either a manual six speed or a DSG with seven speeds. Other engines from the latest EA888 range, created for the Golf and Scirocco, will be used but the 2.0-liter diesel used on the concept will not.

Production of the new model will take place at two different plants: VW’s Hanover plant will create the body shells, while Karmann’s plant at Osnabruck will do the final assembly.

VW states: “The Up! is not a car whose form will become obsolete within a very brief period of time. It shines in its cleverness and yet is made with loving care. And so the Up! is a clear and strong statement for future Volkswagen design.”

Up!’s rear is starting a tradition we will most likely see in many city vehicle concepts – it’s completely transparent, while taillights are high up on the car, so the bike messengers won’t miss you. The VW logo in the rear is behind this see-thru back, and lights up at night…just in case you forget what make the car is. As for the front end, there is still that lovable Beetle-like smiley face grill.

Inside, you have a bit more legroom than your typical mini car, and the dash is laid out with touch screen controls and a fully digital gauges. This may be what future Volkswagen’s look at inside and out.
