Live at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen’s E-Bugster Concept, based off the Beetle, was introduced.

VW’s model includes large chrome wheels and a “fastabck” style, mimicking the latest 2012 Beetle angles.

E-Bugster is a follow up to Volkswagen’s electric Golf Blue E-motion, which is supposed to hit US dealerships by 2013. Golf Blue E-motion will compete with the electric Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-Miev (aka: ‘Mitsubishi i’ in North America).

Here’s a concept photo:

And here’s E-Bugster live at the 2012 #NAIAS

The E-Bugster is powered by a 114 horsepower electric motor, added to a lithium-ion battery that weighs 700-lbs. That engine produces 199 lb-ft of torque.

With a 700 lb battery, it will have to produce a lot of torque just to get out of the driveway.

VW introduced 5 separate Volkswagen Up! compact concepts at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. Each vehicle is based on a VW production car that will rival Scion’s iQ and the Smart fortwo next year. As companies continue to grow, their vehicles are shrinking world wide. Finally, auto makers are taking urbanization and gentrification into account when building cars for the public.

First is the e-up! – which is an all electric variant of the compact city car that Volkswagen will start to build for a mass audience in 2013.

Not to be mistaken with e-up! is eco-up! This vehicle combines “ecofuel” also known as natural gas, and the start/stop BlueMotion Technology from VW, making it one of the greenest cars on the market.

The GT up! is a more powerful GTI variant, able to produce 99 horsepower, and weighs a slight 1984 lbs.

Volkswagen also showed off a four-door / crossover up! at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. VW has teased us with a production version, that may hit dealership lots in two years.

Finally, there’s the up! “azzurra sailing team” edition (yes, in all lower case) – created by Italian designers Giorgetto Giugiaro and Walter de Silva. This compact vehicle has a “nautical-theme” complete with drop-top convertible and lighter paint scheme.

Yes, the Volkswagen Up! Concept has finally been unveiled, in full production ready version. This new concept city car will make its debut first in Germany next year. It will be an entry level vehicle for the foreign auto maker.

Powering up! will be a variety of three-cylinder, 1.0 liter gas engines with BlueMotion tech (which includes stop/start technology) producing 60 bhp and 75 bhp, respectively.

There will also be a natural-gas unit in Europe, offering 68 bhp. The Up/up! comes with an optional City Emergency Braking unit. This “smart system” works at speeds under 18 mph, which can detect impending collisions and apply the vehicles’ brakes automatically.

Up! will be offered in three trim levels – trend, comfort and high. We’ll release more details on each in the coming weeks.

Love it or hate it (as many of you seem to in our site’s comments) the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle has been official unveiled by the German auto maker at the New York International Auto Show.

The vehicle is still undoubtedly a Bug – with its Herbie-like face, dating back to the 1930′s and 40′s, and small stature, “New” Beetle has also been given a few updates. Actually, “New” has been dropped from the name plate all together.

With various performance packages being offered by the company, VW Beetle can remain as neutral as your grandmother’s old Love Bug, or sportier than your brother’s coupe. Options include 19-inch wheels and a rear spoiler, which you can see on the white model pictures.

There’s also several engines to choose from. Volkswagen will offer a 2.0 liter TFSI engine, along with 2.0 liter TDI diesel in both Europe and North American. The North American Beetle also has a 2.5 liter entry-level option, with 170-bhp and 177 lb-ft of torque. There’s even a 200-hp variant available.

2012′s VW Beetle differs in styling from previous generations, with a wider roof and upright back end. Beetle looks more like a hatchback these days, echoing the rising trend for spacious rear compartments in the auto world. Beetle is indeed wider than its predecessor, by over 3 inches, and longer by 6.

Vandalism and hate can be crushing – but morphing it into a positive message takes bravery, and originality. This little Volkswagen from Upstate New York, owned by Erin Davis, accomplished this in 2007. We’ve reported on the “Fag Bug” before. After 4 years on the road, as a tool for open mindedness and activism, Davis shares her journey with Towleroad.

One day, Erin came out to find hate speech spray painted all over her Volkswagen. She was angry, but then an epiphany struck. Take this car, and the negative message portrayed across its body, travel the country. Show that you are not afraid. Share that bravery with others who might be too scared to be honest with themselves.

Towleroad: Have you ever been given any clues as to who may have vandalized your car back in April of 2007?

ED: A few days after my car was vandalized, someone stopped me one night at midnight telling me they saw the person who vandalized my car the night it happened. They said it was a male in a white car. A few days later I received a note saying, “it’s a shame you made this up.” The note had all the A’s capitalized and the other letters lower case. It was the same writing as my car. I interviewed the person who left the note since they left their phone number. His name is Dan. I don’t think he vandalized my car, but some people think he did. He’s the only suspect I ever had.

Towleroad: What do you do with all of the inspirational notes that people have anonymously left on your car?

ED: The hand written notes people leave on my car is my favorite part of driving the fagbug. We all text message and communicate with technology. There’s something to be said for receiving a hand written letter. I save and document all of them. I’ve received almost 140 so far. When I get to 1000 that will make a great book someday.

Towleroad: What do you think about the power of the word “fag?”

ED: The word fag is one the strongest words in our society. It hits hard, strikes a nerve, and offends many. That being said, it’s not a word that’s going anywhere. It’s been around for a long time and will continue to be. People know its weight and use it, for bad and good, like every other term in history that was used to oppress people.

Towleroad: What about the use of the word “fag” within the gay community? How do you feel about that?

ED: It’s not a word I personally use as a term of endearment or one I’ve ever identified with, but I understand that some people do and that’s okay. It’s kind of funny that I say fagbug or type fagbug many times a day but I see fagbug as it’s own word. Vanity Fair just defined fagbug a few weeks ago and put it as a word to remember for the week. Fagbug: “An adorable, polychromatic, and frequently vandalized Volkswagen Beetle designed to facilitate LGBT-tolerance.”

Read the entire interview at Towleroad.com

During “The Big Game” – Super Bowl XLV (Feb. 6th – against the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers) you’ll catch two new spots from the car company.

Volkswagen of America will air two 30-second spots – one for the Passat, and one for the 2012 Beetle – which will run during the second and fourth quarters of the game.

The Passat commercial features a Star Wars theme, produced with the help of Lucasfilm Ltd., George Lucas’ production company. The spot will be accompanied by the “Imperial March” music from film composer John Williams. The ad shows a child dressed as Darth Vader, summoning The Force – which has been mistaken for an actual religion in the UK. And why not, Klingon is an official language.

The other ad for 2012′s VW Beetle features a black beetle who reigns supreme in the forest. The soundtrack includes a new rendition of the famed rock song “Black Betty” by Jon Spencer and the Blues Explosion.

Volkswagen has developed special options packages for the upcoming Polo, Golf and Golf Plus – for which it has chosen fashion design icon and photographer, Karl Lagerfeld, to represent in a German ad campaign.

The VW “STYLE” special editions of the Polo and Golf come with a “money-saving options package” including light-alloy wheels, fog lamps, tinted side and rear windows and STYLE badge. A STYLE-Plus package adds a sunroof or panorama roof, along with new sets of alloy wheels. Here’s the ad, which is in German:

The STYLE packages are also available on the Golf Plus and Golf wagon variants. Each can be purchased with most engine and trim levels. Volkswagen is also offering financing specials to German buyers as of December 23rd.
We’d love to see some of these special edition STYLE models here in the United States, especially those with a panorama roof – a new design trend both VW and other auto makers are starting to pick up for smaller vehicles.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld is best known for his man in black appearance, his ivory white hair combined with all back suit, black leather gloves and dark sunglasses. His fashion designs have been sold around the world, and can be found in magazines including Harper’s and Vogue.

Volkswagen BlueSport is a green sports car from the German auto maker coming in 2014. When VW first showed the BlueSport concept back in 2009 at the North American International Auto Show. Now the German manufacturer says it will bring a ‘production-ready’ version to the 2013 Frankfurt auto show – followed by a 2014 model for release. The car should be priced around $30,000.

The layout of Volkswagen BlueSport will be the same as its concept: a two-seater arrangement with canvas roof and a weight of about 2650 lbs. The brand new ‘MMB platform’ of the car will be developed through the partnership with Audi and Porsche (though most of the development will be done by Porsche, given their experience with rear engine RWD cars). BlueSport’s chassis will share components with the Golf, in order to reduce production costs.

According to Autoevolution: A new 1.6-liter FSI turbocharged engine has been developed for this model. Producing 220 hp and fitted with a variable valve lift system, the powerplant will be mated ti either a manual six speed or a DSG with seven speeds. Other engines from the latest EA888 range, created for the Golf and Scirocco, will be used but the 2.0-liter diesel used on the concept will not.

Production of the new model will take place at two different plants: VW’s Hanover plant will create the body shells, while Karmann’s plant at Osnabruck will do the final assembly.

The Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has set a world record for traveling well over 1500 miles on one tank of fuel. THat’s right folks, a Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion has taken a world record-breaking: 1,527 miles on a single tank of fuel. The Guinness World Records organization has officially recognized this as a world-beating distance!

Driven on public roads in France and Britain by Sunday Times journalist Gavin Conway, the car averaged 45mph and 89.83mpg over 3 days. The Passat Bluemotion’s official, combined economy figure is 64.2mpg (UK).

The Passat Bluemotion is a standard production car, which comes equipped with VW’s stop-start technology, a 1.6-liter rail diesel engine, an economy transmission, aerodynamic changes including a lower ride height, and special tires.

Volkswagen also sells Bluemotion versions of the smaller Golf and GTI models (The Polo in the UK), and was one of the first car makers to offer “green” models. European rivals for the Passat Bluemotion include the Vauxhall Insignia Ecoflex and Ford Mondeo Econetic.

The Passat’s run breaks a record set in 2002 when an Australian couple drove a Peugeot 406 1,459 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Yes, this is a Volkswagen Amarok, the Toyota Tacoma or Dodge Dakota of VW pickups, which will not be coming to United States. Also not coming to the US is the Amarok Camper attachment, by a company with the hilarious name Bimobil.

The camper comes with your usual extras – patio furniture, kitchen, bath and bed area. There must be a lot of great descriptions on the website, but since it’s in German and we love America more than God does we can’t tell you what it says.

Yeah, well, we won’t get it across the pond anyway, since the auto maker isn’t sending Amarok over here. But if you want to check out more photos of a drifter’s paradise, head over to their website at Bimobil
