2011 VW Beetle – A First Look
Volkswagen’s classic Beetle hasn’t changed much since the car first rolled off German assembly lines during World War II. But fans of the little bug don’t seem to mind, why change perfection? The next generation of VW’s tiny masterpiece keeps its cuteness on the outside while sexing it up underneath the bonnet.
The 2011 VW Beetle seems to be heading in a similar direction as Volkswagen’s Up! concept: small and sporty, with a lowered roof to take on less wind resistance. Of course, if you’re measuring close to 6′ tall you may want to go for a convertible version. 2011 will bring a less curvy/bulky Beetle onto dealer lots, showing off a more sporty look, which will be backed up by what leaked statements from the auto maker call “a wide range of engine options.”
Rumors claim the next generation Volkswagen Beetle will have a two and extended four seater variation, possibly spinning off into two separate car models. A leaked interior shot (below) shows off a flashier dash along with futuristic steering wheel and gauges. Sorry to say there doesn’t seem to be a place around the instrument panel for flowers. Keep you eyes out for more official press drops from VW, and enjoy more of the supposed leaked pictures of their 2011 Beetle below.

Come on fellas. The photos are of the 2005 Ragster concept which was shelved by none other than the awful VOA and not of the VWup!/Beetle concept floating around the internet. VOA should’ve built the Ragster as an alternative to the cute but round beetle. I would’ve bought one with a 225 horse 1.8T and a six speed box. The Ragster just oozed cool. To bad it will never happen now. Another one bites the dust, courtesy of the stuck in reverse VOA.

the new bug is the ugliest car i have seen i have wanted one since i was 2 and 4 years from turning 16 they make the bug so ugly it looks like you are trying to copy the pt crusiers which are so ugly now the bug does not look like a bug it looks like a cockroack. my friends hate the new bug so do i oh and heres somthing from a friend:this car sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all we can say is this bla bla bla bla horrible car you should leave the bug the same model but change the inside so that it is more hitec. the new bug sucks

The 2011 Beetle is the ugliest car I have seen. Was considering trading in my 2001 for a 2011 but have changed my mind. I’ll stick with the 2001 until it falls apart and then get another make. Why take a nostalgic auto like the Beetle and change it so drastically that you take the “bug” out of the “Beetle”? One of the most interesting things about the Beetle was the dome top and now you are going to take it away and suggest that tall people get a convertible – GET REAL !!!!!
How can the auto manufacturers of the Beetle change our beloved “Bug” so drastically that it doesn’t even look like the “Bug” anymore – get real and give us back our “bug”
I dont like it. It looks like the bug was flattened on the top??? I feel that the outside should stay the same but change the inside which would include new and updated features!
I think that there is a lot of difference in looks between this potential 2011 New Beetle model and the currently available 2010 models. And it is not for the better!
The 2010 is so much ‘prettier’ and curvier—and definitely retains more of the classic looks.
This new version is more like an everyday ordinary car, and less like a classic Beetle. I am happy to be an owner of the 2010, and would not touch the next years model with a barge pole.

This is an imposter. why don’t they implement what they have learnt from car design and car safety and bring back old designs rather than making imposters and badging them with the original name. They have done the same with the ford mustang and vw scirroco ( which has no resemblence to the old design – it might as well as been a golf).

Rather unfortunate design, VW may have realized they couldn’t sell existing Beetle designs to the greater masses as it was too much of a “cute” car that had a limited audience to granny’s and college girls with cash to burn. I’ll keep the 05 for now, anyways these cars are so poorly constructed I’d recommend looking into something else… considering that this new Beetle’s characteristics appear to be a bit more a morph of small cute into mainstream… then I’d rather consider a car with quality construction, road handle, sophisticated interior, and more power (e.g BMW 1 series)

It’s well known that no other car elicits more of an emotional response from buyers than the VW Beetle. Nice try to gain more sales by making the interior roomier. It came off as a bad dream. It just defeated the reason people choose the classic bug design. Came at a good time for me though…I’m buying an extended warranty on my 2006 Diesel Beetle soon. Should I have to start over with a new car, I’ll look at other designs. I’ll be back when our classic is back.
When are the good folks (volks?) at VW going to wake up and realize that the world is desperately longing for a new, updated Karmann Ghia?
Don’t they know that if they simply kept the basic shape (already fifty years ahead of it’s time, when it was first introduced in the early fifties) perhaps without all of the expensive hand-welding, to cut at least some of the cost, they would have a runaway hit.

don’t even go there about the style. we all have to deal with change so learn how. if you don’t like it don’t buy it. simple as that. don’t bash these ideas because they can only improve the VW beetle. and they arn’t suggesting tall people should ride in a convertable. maybe you guys should do a little more homework on these before you say something.
Tommy.. I agree ! The Ghia would be great thing. use the saem body style and all. It’s no brainer. Vw keeps trying to compete with “cookie cutter” cars of today. They have no clue how much they could expand their sales if they took a chance on the ” niche” body body designs that enthusiasts know and love.

I agree with most of the comments posted…the beetle “look” was one of the primary reasons for choosing that car…this 2011 concept car looks like a beefed up mini-cooper or PTCruiser…..they should have brought back the Karman Ghia styling and it would have been a mega hit!!!! I have a 2005 beetle convertible and may trade it for a 2010 while they are still available, rather than have to go for the new styling….by the way, the curved beetle top made it roomier and a pleasure for both entry and exit….

I am buying a 2010 Beetle this weekend! Been looking and humming and hahhing to long I may be one of the “granny’s” you refer to but…just eat my dust.
Leave the shape alone and offer more colours.
I have a 2004 beetle convertible and she is just grand. Personally, I don’t like the new body. I like curves!!!! Don’t loose the curves… that is what make a bug a bug. If we have to change I would rather go back to the old original herby body style than this new box. Please don’t put the bug in a box!!!! Let it free!!!!
Review of 2011 VW Beetle
These pictures are concept pictures from the old platform of the present beetle, which production just ended. The 2011 Beetle will be based on a new platform which will reduce the massive dash and provide a much streamlined design with a similar roof contour to these pictures. It will lose its cuteness and will have more testosterone in its design.
I have a 2000, and i have always longed for a classic convertible. I just dont know how I feel about it
I had a 68 Beetle and loved it. The new Beetle look feminist the very first time I saw it. I didn’t like it at all. It is just too cute. So I am not surprised at all that VW want to make it more aggressive. But this? It is a big disappointment. If they want to make it more man like, it has to have the look of the old beetle, or somewhat close to mini today. You have to have lots of crome and don’t make it too cute please. I do not want a classic and timelss car and not a cute car. The new Beetle lost its classic car and that is why it is not much of a success. Also, fix the quality problem too. I do not understand why the German doesn’t seem able to match the Japanese cars in terms of quality. German engineering? How about Japanese quality as well.

For the sports car (should I say tuner car lover) lover, VW has always provided a blood pressure spike with the GTI’s, now the Bettle lovers may get the same option! We love them fast, low and wide…
I think the 2011 design is intriguing and somewhat attractive, if you can forget about being beetle-esque. And why would you want to do that? I do not think it will bode well. There is nothing like looking up at all the head room within a Beetle but it looks like that may be gone now.
I don’t like this new 2011 one — it does not look at beetle any more!!! It’s just a dull car. CHANGE in NOT always good especially when it changes for the bad.
You’ve made a big mistake in your design. I’ve owned a 1972 VW Beetle and currently own a Robin Egg Blue (best color) 2005 VW Beetle convertible. I love it. These cars were/are cute; they look like what a Beetle/Bug should look like, have ample power, and everyone in my family thinks the 2005 Beetle is so cute. Now you’ve turned the Beetle into what looks like a flattened battlefield carrier of some type. Huh? Why didn’t you simply update/modernize the interior? Well, at least you have guaranteed a flurry of activity to snatch up the 2010 and earlier inventory. Go get ‘em folks while they last!
I think the new beetle does not even look like a beetle. I am so dissapointed with the look. I have a 2003 and I just love it. I am also dissapointed in the colors they are not making the wild colors like the lime green. volkswagon you dissaponted me!!!!!
Don’t like teh new shape. I had a 06 diesel beetle and loved loved it, but had to have a convertible. WAS going to wait, but once I saw the new changes, I proudly bought an 08 harvest moon convertible. I love it! Looks like if I ever get another new car it will have to be what ever I earn as a Mary Kay consultant. Looking forward to the pink. leave the shape of the bug alone and offer lots more colors!
Well,we have the 2000 (2L).
I don’t want a mini cooper hybrid I just want a new Beetle as my current one is now 10 years old. Still smells new mind you.
The roof has to be round not flattened as everyone points out.
When I was younger the old beetle apparently was stronger because of the rounded roof and in a roll the car would sit on its roof unbuckled safe and sound.
Just need a new version with lots of updated interior features and a slightly bigger boot.
And I’ll tell you what 91 octane petrol would save a fortune.
I have wanted a beetle since I was 16….that was back in 1967!! I have wanted one again since they were brought back in 2000? I am now ready to buy but so disappointed in the change in rear lights from the 2005. I have been looking for a 2005 red or black convertable. And now that you are changing the body……I am no longer interested in a new one…only if I can find an older model and I have a feeling that will be impossible now!!!! I will only buy one if you go back to the rounded classic style!! I get so tired of the automobile industry changing something good!! We as a society don’t need to have new and different all the time…what is wrong with something classic!!!!!!!! Such a BAD new design guys….maybe you need some women in there helping??
I like the new style. I would prefer a more aggressive look by widening it a little more, and having a longer wheel base. Take some of the angle away from the front end, and install a 320 hp 6 cylinder engine. keep the look but design the rear to have a hatch back. Who cares about what the beetle use to look like lets move forward.
The 2011 beetle sucks! It doesnt even look like a bug it looks like a stupid mini cooper and those cars are the ugliest cars out there! I had a blue 2001 new beetle last year and now I drive an orange 2003 new beetle with orange rims and its awesome! leave the design of the car alone!
Please leave the bug looking like a bug, change is not always what people are looking for. I hope the concept photo was just a test to see if the true bug lovers were watching…..Well we are and it seems the majority of us say “NO WAY!!!!!”

i purchased a 2009 black on black new beetle and i just love it. i had always wanted one and it finally happened. i like most people cannot believe they changed this car!!!!!! it drives great handles great good on gas and the power is awesome. i get compliments on mine everywhere i go. i myself think vw should have left the bug stay as is!!!!! the only complaint i have is i wish the hardtops had more crome like the convertibles.
I was so excited to hear of a New Beetle design but also a little nervous since I loved it just the way it looked so far. This is NOT the kind of beetle I’m going to buy any time soon! I’ve owned two beetles so far and would like to get a new one in another year(currently driving a Toyota) But when I’m ready to make that purchase, I will make an efford to find a 2010 model! THIS THING IS UGLY! What’s up with the flat roof? They’re taking all the cuteness out of this vehicle for crying out loud! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS AT VW THINKING? Looks like a beetle after a bad rollover accident. BAD design and I don’t even care how nice it is inside or how fuel efficient it is. Change is not always for the better and VW just made that perfectly clear. I’m disappointed!

I had the new 1998 – first year out – model of the New Beetle. When I saw the proposed new 2011 model, I was disappointed and bought the “Final Edition” of the 2010 model – only 1500 made of the hardtop; 1500 made of the convertible. I love it!

Waaaay cooool. Really like it. It’s Beetle meets Mini Cooper. Brilliant! Way back when, my mother drove a 1969 Beetle. Years later, my sister drove a 1975 Carolina Blue Beetle Super V. Recently, I bought my lovely 16 y/o daughter a RED 2005 New Beetle. What a girly-girl she is in it. Can’t wait to see the 2011′s rolling out and cruising the bi-ways.

i think they look better on the inside with the mirror on the dash. but on the outside it doesnt really have that “beetle” look anymore. it sorta does… but like more sporty? speed is not what volkswagen beetles are made for… i have a ’98 now, and i think its way cuter. sporting the flower seat covers and fake flowers on the dash.

Shame!! The 2011 looks basically the same (lights, bumper, wheels..ect) but the flattened top- just ruins the whole aspect. The dome was what made the beetle so distinct. They should have just improved certain aspects, like many have said, in the interior. I have a salsa red 2000 and definately keeping it forever! Trying to improve it and make it more ” manly ” is honestly not a good proposition because look at all the cars out there for guys … I can guarantee they won’t be checkin out a new beetle.
It looks like it was designed by Renault or Citroen. It also seems to want to be a new Mini. I think VW should have kept its new beetle design and brought out a new design of the Type 3, you know- Fastback and Notchback designs. A bigger, Better Beetle. A modern day Karmann-Ghia would also be nice, the Eos doesn’t quite cut it for me.
I am driving the 2000 version of the car for so many years and I was about to change it for the next model of 2011, before I saw how it is looking like. I am disappointed very much from VW designers. They could make it much better than that. It definitely is not the car I love!!

I am so disappointed at the new 2011 Bettle. I have a 2010 and previously had a 2007 one and I absolutly love how round and cute it is but now they have gone and turned it into something that looks like a mini!! And there’s a reason people choose a Bettle over a mini!! Plus no flower vase!! What is that about? VW have just turned a fab, stylish, cute and unique car into something that looks just like any other make or model with nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd. So disappointed cos was really looking forward to updating my Bettle in another year or two but will definately be looking at a different make and model!!!

Well. my thoughts are that the bug is the ugliest thing possible. people thought the last bug was to round. so VW smashed the roof down. the only old beetle i like is the 1960-1975. then they became full on girl cars. i am ok with that. girls should finaly get a car. but now they are trying to make the car into a guys car too. They failed horribly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then thier is the fact that the roof is alll glass. the role over ratings have to be great. So VW you started out with a great looking beetle. then you gave girls thier own car. now you give us this uggly as hell. crappy inside, and then you gave the car wheels that should be on a car that can make them look good and the car too. So fix this ugly piece of crap. the thing i compair this to is the smart car. you drive it you look gay. if a girl drives it then no guy is going to want to date her or even be seen with the lady who drives that piece of crap. so VW fix this monster you have created.
I am disappointed with the “flat” roof. Where’s the “bug” shape that makes it so appealing and different and gives everyone a smile? It looks like the bug was smashed…trying to kill it? I wanted one for 10 years and finally got a 2010 and love it. Good thing because I don’t find the new style appealing.
I love my Beetles I had one back in the 70′s and now own a new Beetle. I was thinking of an upgrade possibly in 2011, but I think I’ll just hang on to it because the 2011 is missing all the special design features that make the “Beetle” unique from other cars. The new design looks more like every other car on the road ho-hum. Why can’t you give us a design option along with the 2011 model. Even if it means “special order” I’d buy one to keep the classic look.

I love my Beetle but was thinking about trading for a newer model. After looking at the new design I think I’ll keep mine until it falls apart. The new concept misses all the features that make the Beetle unique and special. How about an option between the classic look and the new look. I want mine classic.

HATE IT… HATE IT… HATE IT I owned a l975 and now a 2006 and was thinking of giving my 2006 to my 16 year old and buying a new one for myself -NOT NOW – NO WAY! Just like the Datsun 280Z – ruined it too when they went to the ZX – what is wrong with you guys anyway – when something works, tweek the interior and the little things, but leave the design alone! The bug is called a bug for a reason – it is supposed to look like a bug!

They should make a new beetle have the vintage vw beetle look of a 1964 vw and make it modern from the inside (also the engine more modern), that will be the best up to date beetle out there. Ohh! I am so disappointed in this new look. I have a 2007 bug and was thinking about trading it in for a new one, but now I love my 2007 even more! I guess, I should say thank you for making me see that!

so i have a 2000 and i wanted to get the new beetle but this is disgusting its soo ugly its like a cruiser and beetle put together. they should have kept the old body style and put that big sunroof in smh

The most that should have been done to the new Beetle is to keep the old design and added 4-wheel drive. Also.. the old
Beetle could look terrific in Lime color, or Yellow,or in any two tone colors. The design of the Beetle should not be changed.
I hate it…period. I always wanted a Beetle but this is disappointing.
I think it looks fukin` awsome compared to the model that is currently for sale. It does not look better than the old one but i still like it!
UGLY!!!!!!!! I am so MAD that they changed the look. I will NOT BUY ONE…I was going to buy one in the Fall IF they looked like the original model. WHY did you mess with a legend???? PLEASE return to the former look, and I will buy one. But not this stupid look….it is tacky. It is like a cheap imitation of a porsche, but no one is fooled, it is like a space age look that ruins our dream of the VW Beetle charm……heres a great idea….it would have been better to reproduce the ORIGINAL VW BEETLE from the 60″s, because that is everyones favorite!!!

why not bring back the original look from the 60″s since that is what we all want anyway???? but this sucks….i hate it and wont buy one…..and i am sad because i had plans to buy the new one when it came out IF it looked the same at last years model….bummer. What are you people talking about? The new vw beetle looks alot better, i personally hate the old ones for the stupid roundness of it. I think cutting off the top may have been too much but vw is on the right track this time. Becides it will never be more than a california girls sunny daytime cruiser, i couldnt take myself seriously in it. Why compare it to a mini, this has an original design that people may need to get used too. I have offically wasted 5minutes of my time explaining this. Still think the old old ones look the best.
I LOVE the new BUG!!!!!! it is sooooo CUTE!!!!!! it may not look “original” but i think its fine. all you need is a little curve in the top and there you go! ta-da!!!
I have a 2001 Beetle and love it. It has been a great little car and has served me well. The new Beetle of 2011 looks like a bug that got stepped on. I don’t like it at all. People who like the Beetle (bug) want it to stay a Bug. WHAT WERE YOU PEOPLE THINKING!
Volkswagen have made a complete abortion of their best selling car!! Beetles have always been round and curved on every panel, not square with straight lines and a flat roof!! I am a passionate beetle fan, have been the proud owner of a 1956 Oval window beetle for over 15 years, and recently purchased a cabrio black orange new beetle as I heard they were being discontinued, at the time the dealer mentioned the new model which was on it’s way, I’m glad I didn’t wast my time waiting for it!! It looks like Volkswagen are trying to copy-cat the new mini!!

this is a cute little buggy…although i like the first one better. I probably wouldnt buy it though considering i have a buggy already. i dont need more. But it is STILL cute!
Have an 04 convertible and love it (don’t love the electrical problems though) I say leave the exterior as it was and update the interior…………….think I am going to sell ‘Bella’ anyone interested ? Navy blue with black top, 149k, all options heated leather seats etc etc

I do not like the new style bug it just takes away the old cute little design. I will not be buying this new terribly ugly car but i will be buying a 2010 cute old bug.
I can promise you will not get a lot of people that will buy this car you will definitely see a big decrease in sales. This new bug doesn’t even look like a bug anymore it looks like yall just took it and squished it will another car and by the way it looks terrible.
dissapointed. not pretty at all with the flattened top. looses its appeal. will hang on to my 1998 beetle
